Goodbye 2017 and Hello 2018!!

Hello Everyone!

This year, 2017, has been busy and successful.  As many of you know, being an entrepreneur is rewarding, yet, a lot of hard work.  We celebrated (15) fifteen years in business this past October and the celebration was AMAZING!

Our graduates are so supportive and were on hand to help make the anniversary weekend very special.  We are embracing the new year and excited about the ideas and plans to move through 2018.

We are excited about growth and development of the business.  Going into the new year, we will take time to reflect, study and improve.  The new year brings on resolutions for some, goals for others and a mindset of continuation, if things are working together for good.

Today, I challenge you to do something exciting as you enter 2018!  Try a new food, take a trip, visit a new place in your city, meet a new person, take a class, etc.  In closing, I ask that you challenge yourself and lean forward, out of your comfort zone!

Thank YOU Mr. Joe L. Dudley, Sr.!!!

Hello Everyone!!!

Today, I want to take time to salute a man who helped change my life.  Mr. Joe L.Dudley, Sr. turned 80 years old this year in May.  Those of you who know him have heard the story of him turning a $10 investment into millions.

There are many more stories of his (and his family) greatness.  I had the opportunity to work for this AWESOME family business.  A business made of mostly African-Americans who were well-dressed, articulate, professional, successful and commanded respect without saying a word.

The presence of a Dudley person and the conversation was different.  As a young stylist, I saw the people from the company, dressed in their "Dudley blue," meeting before the hair shows.  And, years later, I was wearing the "Dudley blue" and attending those meetings.

Mr. Dudley and his family set the bar very high.  And, as of today, no other hair product company has been able to achieve that type of uniqueness, greatness or culture. I have a BA in Business Administration and Management, but, what I learned working at Dudley's was far beyond my college curriculum.

I have told Mr. Dudley "Thank You" so many times and I still seek his advice and counsel.  He has named me the "Madame C.J.Walker of this generation" and I humbly accept all that goes with it.  He has received numerous awards and accolades, but, I want to continue lifting him and letting the world know his contributions to the beauty industry.

"Work to Learn; Not to Earn!"

Hello Everyone!!

Many times, when we work, we want to make a lot of money.  Most of us have worked on jobs and have not always been happy.  Either we didn't like the hours, the pay, the manager, the conditions, etc. And, some of us decided we wanted to own a business, therefore, we could be in charge and make the rules.

Sometimes, working on a job will give you the motivation needed to take the leap of faith to pursue entrepreneurship.  During the years of working at Dudley Products, Mr. Dudley would often speak about "Work to Learn, Not to Earn!"  When I first heard him announce that topic, I was looking at him like he had lost his mind!  Thinking, "no way, I have already done that!"

As he continued to speak, I realized he was referring to sweat equity, experience, and observation.  He was speaking about doing the job effectively and efficiently, while learning the business at the same time.  Paying attention to details, asking questions, making notes of the things you like and that are working to make the business successful.

He was also speaking about learning everything you can, while on a job.  And, if you were to pursue entrepreneurship, you will have learned some key pointers needed to make your business successful.  You will have the experience of being a part of a successful business.  You will not mind the sweat equity needed to be invested into embarking on entrepreneurship, because you would have done it for someone else.

After hearing Mr. Dudley speak on this topic several times, his meaning was clear to me.  Members of the Toni Love Group shared on the March 2017 conference call, examples of when they worked to learn and how it is beneficial to them now.

Lori Russell of VA was a manager of a J.C. Penney salon and now owns a business.  She shared a lot of helpful information on the conference call about the pointers she learned at J.C. Penney and it still using today. (To hear Lori, log onto www.tonilovegroup.com.)

Although, everything may not be "picture perfect," where you are working today, but, go into work tomorrow with a different outlook.  The tasks you are performing now for someone else, may be the key to your success!

Wisdom Brings Joy!

Hello Everyone!

Wisdom has been defined as "the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; the quality of being wise." Many times, people make decisions in their personal and professional lives without using wisdom.  These decisions can be due to not wanting to hurt the feelings of a loved one or not wanting to disagree with authority on a job. Afterwards, the feelings of regret starts to flow throughout the body.

New business owners tend to rely on information of others when making important decisions.  Sometimes, the information they receive does not fit their business model, but, they do it anyway.  Making a decision that is not wise. In the beauty industry, people tend to see something working for another business owner and it sparks their curiosity.  Then, that owner will change their business model without thinking about it.

They tend to act first, without making an informed decision.  They see the advertisement on social media, the owner may be driving a luxury vehicle and wearing name brand clothes. And, a decision is made to change the original business model, based on an assumption.

It is very important to make wise decisions in our personal and professional lives.  Many people are in marriages and relationships and are not happy.  They feel is it wise to stay because of various reasons and complain about the relationship to others. Just as, people stay on jobs and are not fulfilled or happy. They stay because they may be comfortable or too scared to leave or too lazy to try and get another one.

In relationships, people stay because of kids, monetary reasons, etc. Yet, they are not truly happy. Both situations need to be analyzed on an individual basis before deciding the wise thing to do.  But, life is too short not to use wisdom and be happy.  Wisdom brings joy!

Love and History!

Hello Everyone!!

February has been deemed the month of LOVE!  Before January ends, we start to see the color red and heart-shaped boxes throughout the shopping malls, grocery stores, etc.  The 14th is the day to express our love to our sweethearts a little bit more than usual.  Lovers feel joyous, yet, anxious.  Proposals will happen, announcements will be made, and flowers will be delivered.

Love is a beautiful thing.  The feeling of knowing someone else loves you is great!  The security of being protected and having another person being concerned about your well-being is priceless.  The laughter shared between lovers, the comfort of being yourself and allowing your guards to come down can be refreshing. Valentine's Day reminds us that being in love is okay.  Being in love should be celebrated on a special day.

February is also a month to celebrate the achievements of many great African-Americans and/or black people, who have contributed so much to our society.

Many are unknown or "Hidden Figures," as the movie title suggests.  The movie that tells the story of three amazing African American female mathematicians who were very instrumental in assisting with getting a man to the moon.  And, there are so many others who we do not hear or read about in the history books.

Thank goodness for technology, because today, we can research and find out more about these great people of color who contributed to American history.  Movies like Hidden Figures, 42, Roots, To Sir, With Love and others can assist with aiding all people with a better understanding of the African-American heritage.

I remember being given a book entitled, "The Color Purple," when I was a teenager.  The book later became a movie and I remember the excitement of seeing what I read come to life before me. Watching the movie as a teen, I was not mature enough to understand the various messages that was meant to be conveyed. Watching it again as adult, I clearly understood the messages.

The early exposure to African-American history through books, documentaries and movies was great for me. Now, it's time we are all exposed to the contributions made by so many great people.  Let's get started TODAY!
