Hello Everyone!
The process of goal setting can be life changing. Many people set goals with high hopes of getting them accomplished within a certain time. Once the time passes and the goal is not achieved, many get discouraged and give up.
People who are super-achievers make a relentless commitment to constant learn. They have clear goals expressed in a crafted document detailing their plans. These are serious people seeking results. But, be reminded, people with average intelligence have achieved greatness by understanding the skill of goal setting.
There different types of goals: short term goal and long term goals. Some would go a step further and say, "unrealistic and realistic goals." When setting goals, you must be clear on what you are seeking. Things will not be accessible, until your thoughts are focused and directed. Also, the mind has to see it and you have to believe it is possible.
Some reasons goal setting can fail:
1. Most people make a "wish list" and cross their fingers. There is no plan of action.
2. Your ideas are not clear. Your goals must be crystal clear.
3. You are all TALK. You do not have a strategy in place, nor do you have the resources.
4. You do not have a "Management System." You do not have a system to keep you on track.
5. You are lacking reinforcement. You lack the support and/or guidance needed along the way.
When you have announced your goals to others, you need someone to hold you accountable and to "call you out!" Also, you need someone to give you encouragement. When working toward something positive, you may face obstacles and challenges. Therefore, a support system is important.
We are in the first quarter of 2015, this is an awesome time for setting new goals!

Hit the "Re-Set" Button!!
Hello Everyone!
I would like to challenge all the readers today. I challenge you to take a few "DISCONNECT DAYS" this year. We are all busy with electronic devices, social media communications and other distractions. Some people NEVER "turn it off," it's a way of life.
People are busy checking e-mails, responding to other communications, re-acting to other people's agendas and carrying stress around with them everyday. These are distractions and some days it's a constant, never ending stream. Take some time to rest and recover and set a goal to focus on being creative and productive. It's okay to enjoy a day of silence, reading a book or your favorite magazine, enjoying nature, doing something with your friends and family, or spending time actually talking to a person, instead of sending a text.
Use these days of silence to focus on a project for work or just to recover and revitalize. During the month of February, take time to enjoy LOVE! Do something meaningful without the use of an electronic device. Also, during this month, spend time learning about Black History, by visiting a museum or taking in a movie. Being it's the 50th Anniversary of "Bloody Sunday," take time to see the movie, "Selma" during a week day when the theater is NOT full.
Once you have fully disconnected, it will be time to "hit the re-set button!" When you disconnect from your usual daily activities, you can create depth, experience a great decompression from your busy surroundings, feel emotional relief, and return to work ready to be more effective and efficient. If you are the owner or employer, you are ready to help your employees become more independent.
Have you ever disconnected from your busy surroundings? If so, how many days did you disconnect last year? If you haven't tried it, make it a goal in 2015!:)

Move Forward
Hello Everyone!!!
The new year is here and it is time to "run to your destiny!" Instead of setting resolutions for this year, get busy preparing for all the years to come. The work you do now will serve as a foundation for your future. It is time to go through your mind, phone, address book and press DELETE.
In order to move forward, there has be to be a separation of your past habits, especially, if they are affecting your life in a negative manner. Most are afraid, but, you have to get away from that which is familiar and leave something or someone and explore something new and different.
When I decided to move to Atlanta, in the beginning, I didn't tell anyone. It was a difficult decision in one aspect because I was very comfortable and I had a lot of family, friends, and business contacts in my area. My business was successful and in the natural, there was no reason to move. But, I knew in order for me to grow, I needed to make a change in my life.
I felt I had hit my "glass ceiling" in the area. As I thought more about it, I shared my idea with my mother, she said, "I don't want you to go, but, I know you need to go. I want to you to explore all your opportunities and spread your wings. I want you to be happy and you can always come home."
One of my mentors told me, "if you can start a business and make it successful once, you can do it again." Another mentor told me, "being comfortable and not challenging yourself is for lazy people. You're not lazy and when you challenge yourself, you grow and build character, and you should never stop growing."
Therefore, I knew I was thinking the right way. I knew it was time to move forward. In my personal life, I had to make a decision. Yes, it was hard. I had lifelong friends, former co-workers, employees who were like family, and loved ones who I had to tell good-bye, but, I did it. I wanted to learned something new, I wanted a different lifestyle, I wanted to meet new people from different cultures, and I wanted to explore the unknown.
I heard a speaker say, "you can't stay where you use to and do what you use to when God is calling you." Therefore, I ask, "what is God calling you to do?"

"Out with the Old and In with the New"
Hello Everyone!!
It's December 2014 and it's time to purge people and things out of your life. This is the time to take inventory and make decisions. Also, its time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. As the Christmas carol goes, "it's the most wonderful time of the year."
December appears to be the month people are in a festive and happy mood. Most are getting into the spirit of Christmas and making plans for the next year. During this time, many remove unhealthy things and people who take up space in their lives. "Out with the old and in with the New," is the phrase used to describe this phase.
Don't allow your past to hold you hostage! It's okay to want to move forward and value yourself and disconnect with people. Give yourself permission to move forward, enjoy your life, and have healthy relationships. It's time to go through your phone and e-mail addresses and press "delete." Sometimes in life, you must do it.
It's time to understand the true meaning of healthy family relationships, friendships, and business relationships. I have learned all business is NOT good business. I have learned to release people from my life without notice or warning. I have learned there is no amount of money worth me putting my intellect, skills, and talents on the back burner because someone else is incompetent. I have learned the true meaning of friendship and all the people who use the term and smile are NOT friends. We have to live in our truth.
Over the years, doing business with the public and being a person of service, it's "on-the-job-training." Cosmetology is a "service" profession. Cosmetologists provide a service for pay, therefore, in this industry, you come in contact with a lot of people.
I'm so grateful because my personal journey has been amazing thus far. I have met some wonderful people and made so many positive business connections and met life long friends. Therefore, this December, I celebrate and I am very thankful for all that I have achieved and accomplished this year. I'm thankful to God for placing the right people in my life this year and removing the wrong people. This year has been good, but, next year will be great!
So, out with 2014 and I welcome 2015! I'm living in my truth, are you?

Dreams Do Not Have Deadlines
Hello Everyone!!!
November is here and it is time to prepare for the holidays. This is a great time to think about your goals for next year. Instead of making a resolution on New Year's Eve for 2015, design a strategic plan for your life now.
Many people have dreams and are afraid to take the first step. Common excuses are: "I'm too old, it's too late, I'm scared I'm going to fail, what if it's not going to work, etc." Please understand, if you allow these things to take over your mind, you will never fulfill your dream.
Dreams do not have deadlines! It's never too late! When I was teaching high school and college students, I would tell them to dream big! Envision yourself doing what you like and create dream boards to keep the images in front of you. Also, pray and ask God to bless you and give you the tools to make it a reality.
It is not a good idea to verbalize your dreams to everyone. Many people will not be encouraging or understand. And, if the person is very influential in your life, their "negative"opinion can possibly make you doubt yourself. Therefore, it is important to surround yourself with people who think outside the box.
Believe or not, your environment dictates a large percentage of your life's outcome. Who are you socializing with on a regular basis? Is your mate/spouse a negative person? Are your family members encouraging you? Do your friends support your endeavors?
Think about the people in the "inner circle" of your life and ask yourself these questions. Before entering next year, take a long look at your life and ask yourself, "Why haven't I fulfilled my dream?" When you realize the answer, it will be time to hit the delete button and remove some people from your life.
End 2014 with closure and excitement about 2015! Have a wonderful holiday season......peace and blessings!

Multiple Streams of Income
Hello Everyone!
Over the years, I have read books by and followed successful people. I understand everything starts with the mind. In order to be successful, we have to "change our thinking to change our lives." After the mindset has changed and opened to new ideas and opportunities, the plan has to be designed and implemented. In the hair industry, a lot of people don't think beyond the chair.
They work until retirement age without a plan. But, today, I'm happy to announce, cosmetologists are smarter! They are retailing in their salons, embracing other opportunities, specializing in certain areas, and planning their financial futures. Also, because of the economy, many have had to take on a second job, outside of the industry.
Donald Trump, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and other successful people have multiple streams of income. We may know them for certain areas of expertise. For example, Donald Trump is known for real estate. But, he has a television show and other projects in which he is involved to generate revenue.
With the emergence of social media, so much is exposed. The exposure can be good and bad. In the hair industry, people going on YouTube to learn a new hairstyle is good for the consumers, but, bad for the hairstylists. If clients can learn how to do hairstyles and what to use to achieve them from YouTube, the results may be a decrease in business for the hairstylists.
I encourage hairstylists to go to school and take classes such as; Marketing, General Business, etc., to learn how to advance in this industry. I urge them to keep an open mind and explore other business opportunities, while staying true to what they love. A lot of people are satisfied with a job and a pay check.
What happens when you retire and have no skills? What happens when you retire and the paycheck is less, yet, you have the same bills? What happens when you are too old for the jobs offered and no employer wants to insure you? What happens if what you are doing now is all you know?
Open your minds and embrace something new! Plan your retirement now while you are young. Don't exist in this life, live it!!!!

"Defying the Urge to Quit"
Hello Everyone!!!
When I worked at Dudley Products Company, my co-worker, Marcus, would recite a poem entitled, "Don' t Quit." He would recite this poem with so much emotion, as if he was preaching a sermon. He had been taught this poem as a young adult because he had a learning disability. Later, he became a very successful salesman with the company.
Marcus has been invited to many events to tell his story. He tells how reciting this poem has become a part of his belief system. He also tells about embarrassing things that has happened to him during his life because of his learning disability. He usually ends his speeches reciting the poem and encouraging people not to give up on their dreams.
Recently, I watched T.D. Jakes preach about defying the urge to quit and I thought about my life. I thought about the things I've tried that didn't work. I thought about past relationships, business and personal, and how I threw in the towel when things got tough. Now, I understand, when I changed my thinking, my life took a different path.
I've come to understand, when I make a decision, I have to hold myself accountable. I understand every plan executed will not always yield the expected results. For example: A person can distribute five thousand (5000) flyers and not get one customer. If this happened, a lot of people will feel: "this is not for me," "I don't want to be self-employed," "I need a job," etc. But, you can't give up.
You have to understand, if you take one step to help yourself, God will take two. When things get tough, I look at myself, and ask, "What can I do differently?" Also, before giving up, try everything possible to make it work. If it doesn't, I walk away with no regrets.
Today, I urge students, if they love the beauty industry and are sure they want to be a part of it, take advantage of all opportunities. I tell them to continue their education, think outside the box, don't be afraid to relocate, surround themselves with smarter people, and remain eager to learn. Surrounding yourself with smarter and positive people is a must.
Lastly, to anyone reading this article, if you have an idea and believe it is needed in the marketplace, go for it! Your friends and family may not understand your decisions, but, do what makes you happy and DON'T QUIT!!!!
