This is the time to have that Valentine's Day Special for your clients. Shampoos and Sets, Hair Color services, Chemical Relaxer services, Haircuts, Manicures, Pedicures, Facials, and more, discount it all, this month! Show your clients some LOVE.....

Some businesses don't ever run a special and clients have been patronizing them for years. This is a major problem for small business owners. But, you have to follow the "Big Boys." Practice the "Law of Duplication." Walmart sends out a sales paper, Pizza Hut has the large $10 dollar pizza, Papa John's has the large $11 pizza with any toppings, Dunkin Doughnuts has "heart-shaped" dougnuts on sale this month, the jewlery stores are promoting specials throughout the month, and YOU, the small business owner are NOT doing anything to show customer appreciation.

And, you're frustrated, wondering why you're business is not as successful as you thought it would be at this time. Remember, your clients want to feel loved and appreciated.....

It is also important to show love to the black people who don't get mentioned or recognized until this month. February is Black History month. But, in my mind, Black History is being made every month, because someone black somewhere is doing something great. And, our youth should be taught about current and historical black people every month.

In the hair industry, we have so many black contributors who are not mentioned in the cosmetology books. People who have made millions, have been philanthropists and helped a lot of people. The most common individual mentioned is Madame C.J. Walker, who was the first black female, self-made millionaire. Many think she invented the pressing comb, but, she invented a salve/oil to be used in conjunction with it.

We have other "greats" in our industry, such as, but not limited to: Mr. S.B. Fuller, Mr. Cornell McBride, Mr. Joe Dudley, Jr., Ms. Annie T. Malone, Mr. Harry Green, and more. Personally, Madame C.J. Walker's story is very inspirational, as Mr. S.B. Fuller and Ms. Annie Malone's. For the "greats" who are still alive, I try to "pick their brains" everytime I see them at a show or event.

Trust me, they have more information than any textbook about achieving success, selling, recruiting, branding, marketing, etc.

Another mistake many people make, they don't want to ask for help or advice. Especially from a person who has done what they are doing now. If the person was successful at it, you need to ask alot of questions. You can make the new job or position your own, but, if this person is willing to share knowledge and tips to make it easier and better for you, get rid of your pride.

I have been very fortunate in my life and career, because I have intentionally surrounded myself with people who are more intelligent.

A lesson I learned from Mr. Dudley. He said, "Toni, if you're the smartest person in your business or organization, you have a problem. You have to surround yourself with people to help you think, make suggestions, take initiative, be creative, etc. You can't surround yourself with a bunch of laborers. You need people who can handle things when you're not there."

He has given me so much great advice, as well as Mr. McBride, Mr. Green, and others. My point is, they showed me a lot of LOVE. They wanted me to do well and they shared the information.

On a personal note, I have experienced love from my parents, when I was younger, my dad gave me a box of chocolates for Valentine's Day until he died, both parents showered me with lots of hugs and kisses, my siblings showed me love, as well as my extended family, my clients, my employees, co-workers, and the special people reading this today. (wink):-)

I have been blessed to experience love in my life....to know what it feels like to be happy, in love and smiling with my eyes, when I look at a person. Love is BEAUTIFUL!!!

Create a Better Day!!!
Toni Love
Author: "The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extensions" (sold everywhere)
Facebook: Toni Love Cosmetology 2
Twitter: @Cosmogirl205

Understanding Your "Brand".......

Happy New Year Everyone!!!

I hope this is a better year. And, as you grow in your business, you will make new decisions, target new markets, create new environments, etc. The new decisions can be made as to "how" you conduct your business. The things you will change or modify to increase your business.

Targeting new markets is always fun and interesting, as you learn "why" you need to do it and "how" will you do it. Each year should bring a change. If you are not accepting debit and credit cards in your business, this may be the year to do it. If you are extending credit to clients and they are not appreciative enough to pay you, this may be the year to stop it. These are the decisions you may need to make in regards to "how" you continue to conduct business.

I heard a speaker say, "there is pain in change," some people are afraid of the unknown, so they continue in a way, in which, they are comfortable. Even if it's NOT lucrative and/or productive.

Many people in business DO NOT understand "branding." In order to have a successful business, you have to understand your brand. For example: Toni Love is a brand. Most people know the Toni Love brand for Cosmetology, Education, and Weaving. Your brand should be real, authentic, consistent, and ever-evolving as time goes on.

For example: the Toni Love brand started as a licensed cosmetologist, who developed a large clientele while working behind the chair. Then, a licensed cosmetology instructor, a platform artist, a published author, a International Educator, a school owner, a supplier of educational dvds, and now a product owner. (see http://www.tonilove.com/) All of these areas of interest evolved from being a licensed cosmetologist.

Also, I have always identified "my nucleus/my core" and stayed true to it. Many people want to do so many things and they become known for several things or never become known for anything of significance. For example: When you think Oprah, you think "Talk Show Host," Martha Stewart is known for being "Crafty," Richard Simmons is known for exercise and he ALWAYS looks like his brand. Everytime you see him, he's usually wearing the stripped shorts or some type of exercise attire.

When people see you, your brand should be represented; be it business, sexy, contemporary, etc. To build your brand faster and consistently, you must have exposure! Today, because of social media websites and other avenues, it is very easy to get some exposure. But, of course to get major exposure, you will have to spend some money. But, again, it depends on your brand and what you have to offer the market.

So, starting this month, take time to do some "soul searching"......identify what you like to do, identify the market that could benefit from your services, ask yourself, are you really targeting the right market? And, if you are thinking about expanding your market or changing, ask yourself, "why?"

Remember, EVERYONE is a brand, now ask yourself, "WHAT ARE YOU REPRESENTING?"

Create a Better Year!!!
Toni Love
Author: "The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extensions" (now sold @ Walmart.com)
Twitter: @cosmogirl205
FBook: Toni Love Cosmetology
http://www.tonilove.com/

Men Grooming Products for the Holidays

Hello Everyone!!!!

As we enter the holiday season, it's time to start shopping for gifts for loved ones. This time of year is filled with anticipation, dropping hints, and loads of expectations. In many cases, it seems as if women are easier to shop for than men.

It's simple, women love cash, jewlery, gift cards to favorite retailers, nice vehicles, accessories, etc. When shopping for men, women ponder.....Does he play golf?, Is he a sports fan?, Does he wear jewlery?, Is he a hunter?, etc. It becomes somewhat of a difficult task to shop for men.

So, I want to offer a few solutions to assist with your shopping this year. Many stylists from across the United States contact me in a panic, seeking advice about salvaging their struggling business. As always, I tell them, the key to success is through Continuing Education. This article was so interesting, one salon in Maryland had nine hairstylists and seven of them hold college degrees!!!

A few had been laid off from their corporate jobs and others saw an opportunity in the hair industry and quit their corporate jobs. There has been an 18% increase in the overall salon business during these tough economic times. I don't know about you, but, I found this information "empowering", because if you're feeling like your business is slow and you're feeling defeated and discouraged, it's time to get up and get moving.

As I mentioned, some of these people are NEW to the industry. So, if you are a "veteran", it's time to get up and get busy! If you are a Non-Surgical Hair Replacement Specialist, it's time to take some classes and seek new services to offer in your business. If you haven't been to a conference, it's time to attend one.

If you are reading this and you are not performing hair loss services in your business, this is the time to add them to your "hair menu." This is the time to take classes, get certified in new specialties, so you can be ready for the new year. "Get CERTIFIED in 2011 and get PAID in 2012" should be your new motto.

If the sylists in Maryland and other states are booming during these tough times, why aren't you? Before the end of the year, it's time to hold a staff meeting; ask your stylists for suggestions, delegate, let them lead with their ideas, do a better job with marketing, hit the streets on a day off and pass out flyers as a group, (teamwork makes the dream work!) and end this year feeling great and not defeated.

One of the ladies interviewed in the CNN story said, before she stopped getting her hair done, she would give up buying shoes! The clients are out there, YOU have to go out and bring them into your business!!!!

*To read the article and watch the video clip, friend me on Facebook: Toni Love Cosmetology and the story is posted on my wall*

Create a Better Day!!!

Toni Love
Author: "The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extensions"
www.tonilove.com
770-704-7653

Fall Is Almost Here!!!

Hello Everyone!!!

The Fall season is almost here and it's time to get those sweaters out of storage. Also, it's time to get the fall decorations out of storage and make a few changes in the business. During the year, it's a good idea to give your clients something new and fresh.

They visit your business week after week, month after month, and year after year; only to see the same dull-colored walls, or the same flower sitting in the corner collecting dust. If you haven't made any changes in a while, start now, by taking "baby steps".

Make a decision to paint one wall or take one room to get started with the process. For example, I always changed the bathroom in my business. The clients loved it and some would come in and go directly to the bathroom to see if anything changed since they were there last. Anyone can appreciate a clean, well-fragranced, beautifully decorated bathroom in a business or a home.

In some businesses, it's one of the rooms that get the least attention. I would decorate it for all seasons and holidays. I would paint the walls a different color or even paint one wall to give it a little "flavor". My staff and I arranged other decorative items in there to give it the appeal we were seeking. The children would say, "ooo and ah" and even the male clients would comment on it. When clients feel you take pride in your business, they will respect, appreciate, and recruit for it. Your room of choice may not be the bathroom, it may be your waiting area, it doesn't matter, just start making a few changes.

The Fall season is another time to introduce new hairstyles to clients. If the client is wearing a "system/unit", this may be the time to start speaking to him or her about a new one. Make a suggestion to try another texture of hair or maybe, a new color. For the clients, who are not wearing a system/unit, this is the time to suggest a new cut or color.

Many clients like to go lighter in the summer and tone down during the fall and winter seasons. These suggestions are methods to increase your revenue. Any time clients add new services or order new systems/units, it means more profits for your business.

The time is NOW!!! Why are you waiting? Get in the spirit!!!

The changes you make in your business will possibly make your clients feel better as they walk in the door. Or, the changes will possibly make you feel better about your business and other opportunities awaiting you!!!

Create a Better Day!
Toni Love
www.tonilove.com
Author: "The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extensions"
Facebook: Toni Love Cosmetology
Twitter: @cosmogirl205

New Beginnings

Hello Everyone!!!!

Recently, I met a man named John. I find John very intelligent, interesting, intriquing, and witty. I have observed him over the past few weeks and have learned a great deal. John is at a point in his life, he's ready for change and speaking to him, I like his approach to his decision making. He shared with me, "I can't make decisions on emotions." "I have to wait to see how I'm feeling in a few months and be sure my career stays in tact."

He acknowledges the change is needed and he wants to be happy. He shared, the life-changing decision will be the best move for him, but, he wants to be sure. John is taking time to look at all aspects of his life.

In life, as we grow, change is needed to reach a new level. Whether it's a level of happiness in our personal life or a level of success in our professional life. At some point, we have to make a decision. When I moved to Atlanta, in the "natural", it didn't make sense. I had all the things I needed in Alabama and everything was paid in full.

But, if we don't challenge ourselves and take risks, we become complacent and stop growing. Some of my friends and family couldn't see it and it didn't make sense to them, but, I saw it. The move was for me and it made me happy. Personal and professional decisions are not always supported by friends and family. Sometimes, these people are not happy in their own lives or can't move and want to hold you back. Sometimes, it's jealousy and selfishness, and not always with a malicious intent. But, because they will miss being around you.

In business, sometimes we have to change our location to attract our "target market". And, sometimes our clients will get upset, because the new location is not as convenient for them to patronize you. Or, they will miss you being in their community and the services rendered.

Change is good. Life is too short to be unhappy, lonely, and living with regrets. Also, I have learned, some opportuinites don't come a second or third time, and you have to take advantage of them when they arise. When my opportunity arose to move to Atlanta, I didn't hesitate, I knew I had to do it and it was the best move for me.

Some people are not like John, they don't take time to think about all aspects of things and the consequences involved with their decision. Some people make hasty decisions and harbor regret and resentment. As you go forward in your business and personal life, take a piece of paper and write down the "pros and cons" of your decision. If the "pros" heavily outweigh the "cons", ask your higher power for guidance, devise your "exit" plan, make your move and don't look back.

Maybe, you're in line for a blessing, trust God, and step out on faith.......Is it time for your new beginning?

Until next time......Create a Better Day!!!
Toni Love
Author: "The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extensions"
http://www.tonilove.com/
Facebook: Toni Love Cosmetology
Twitter: @cosmogirl205

Leadership Isn't Easy!!!!!

Hello Everyone!!!

As many of you know, I've been self-employed over the last nine (9) years, and believe me, it's a constant learning experience. I heard someone say, "Where there are people, there are problems and where there are problems, there are people."Therefore, having an understanding of people will help you. Most effective leaders, don't make decisions on emotions. Follow the news, those who do, get in trouble......

Most effective leaders have what I like to call, a "Master Mind Group." (At least, this is what I call my group.) All of these people are much smarter than me. They have experienced some of the things and/or similar things I am going through, as I grow and develop. They offer a wealth of knowledge and don't tell me what I WANT to hear, but, what I need to hear about the topics of discussion. These people are very successful and have obtained millions and billions of dollars, being in leadership positions. They challenge me.......

If you are the smartest person in your salon, on your staff, at your plant (in your position), in your barbershop, at your carwash, mechanic shop, law enforcement office, etc.; and you're the leader or the person in charge, your business or organization is in trouble.

In leadership, you can't be afraid to ASK FOR HELP!!! Let go of your pride, stop being embarrassed, stop losing money, and stop pretending all is great. But, before asking for help, be sure to have a clear vision of what you are trying to accomplish and be sure you can articulate it to people. They need to "see it" and/or understand the concept BEFORE they give advice or invest their money. People don't want to waste money or time.

Deshaun Bullard of Nouritress Products and I have seen each other over the years at hair shows. Today, she has her products in J.C. Penney and is in negotiations with Target. As a positive leader in our industry, she has given me a wealth of information to use as I launch the Toni Love's Hair Cleansing System. She gave me information pertaining to marketing and positioning the products, as well as how to get the products overseas. Her products are in Africa and England too. A leader reaches back and helps others.

As a leader, you have to be prepared to face criticism, scrutiny, jealousy, as well as competition within your own organization and/or business. Many people who work alongside you, don't really like you and will leave you, only to compete with you, feeling they can do it better......And, the good leader controls his/her emotions, stays focused, and keeps it moving........

I love hearing stories of great leaders and business people: Jack Welch, John H. Johnson, S.B. Fuller, Daymond John, Frank Caciatto, Mary Kay, Stan Pate, Madame C.J. Walker and many more. They had humble beginnings, whether it was asking friends and family for support and/or money, or having enough courage to ask a stranger to believe in their vision and help.

Leadership is powerful and somewhat of an obligation. You have the opportunity to impact many lives. Therefore, be true to yourself, don't compromise your integrity, follow the rules, and don't worry about who doesn't like you. As a leader, when you walk into the office, plant, salon, shop, etc., and everyone stops talking, go in your office and smile, because you have earned their respect!:-)

Until Next Time.....
Create a Better Day!
Toni Love, author "The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extensions" (sold online and in bookstores)
Facebook: Toni Love Cosmetology
Twitter: @cosmogirl205

Summer is Here!!!!

Hello Everyone!!!!

Summer is here and it is hot!!!! As I moved through May and ended the month with a great birthday and many birthday wishes. Now, the celebration period is over and it's back to work. June has started off pretty busy for me. I made it through the Premiere Show in Orlando.

I had the opportunity to hang out with an old friend from my military days.....I was assisted in my classes by a former student, Nichelle Nesbitt, who is an Industrial Engineer by trade, and pursued her passion to become a licensed cosmetologist. Nichelle is very articulate and driven, working a full-time job, owning and operating a salon, and arriving to work some mornings @ 5am. And, she attended my Hair Replacement Class in December 2010 and became a certified Hair Loss Specialist. I was so impressed with her drive and positive attitude.

I had dinner with my chemist, Dwayne Gavin and our colleague William Onyebuagu, who is also a chemist and they're both from Chicago. (William, by way of Nigeria) I'm always intriqued by these two; they are exceptionally smart and I love conversing with them and picking their brains. I learn so much listening to their excitement about the next big project. I'm intriqued and impressed by their conversation about Paris, Italy, Switzerland, London and other places they visit on a regular basis for work. (just as we would visit another state) And to hear them reminence about the time they were both in the same country and randomly bumped into each other, as if they were in their hometown of Chicago.......So Interesting!!!

My friend, Thomas, from the military mentioned he was about to register for college at age 45....he said he remembered, he thought about going when he was 39 years old and dismissed the thought, because he would be 43 when he completed the degree program. He said a friend told him, "whether you go to school or not, you're still going to be 43". (So profound!!!) Of course, now he wishes he would have gone to school earlier, but, it's NEVER too late!!!!

I had the opportunity to sit with Jim Cox, the Executive Director of American Association of Cosmetology Schools. We have been friends for years and he, along with Frank Caciatto, have been my mentors and assisted and advised me throughout my career. I saw Sandra Martin of OnRite, who is also a dear friend. Hair Shows have a tendency to bring all people from all aspects of our industry to one level for a weekend of education, motivation, and loads of fun.....

Also, just after the Premiere Show, I immediately started consulting with a new business opening on June 9, 2011. I'm excited for the management and staff as they embark upon this great opportunity.

Lastly, June has started with me learning alot from listening to and observing people. Being in the midst of "positivity" and around positive energy. If you are in a "negative", "draining" situation and the conversations have no substance, just noise......get out!!!! There's so much living to be done, so many places to see, so many things to do.....Just like summer, your life can be HOT!!!!!

Until Next Time.....
Create a Better Day!!!

Toni Love
Author: The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extensions
Facebook: Toni Love Cosmetology
Twitter: @cosmogirl205
www.tonilove.com

Is it Time to Change Your Image?

Hello Everyone!!!

First, let me "Thank You" for the calls, e-mails, and texts I received after that devastating tornado hit AL.....My family is fine....Join me in praying for the families who were not as fortunate.......

I ask all of you, "Is it Time to Change Your Image"? This question can be applied to your personal and professional life. Changing your personal image can start with something as simple as a hairstyle or an outfit. It can also apply to your personal lifestyle. Making changes in different areas of your life, from your attitude, to painting a room in your home.

Many may ask, "how will I know when I need to make a change"? You'll know when you are tired, unhappy, and/or not getting the expected results. In life, we must realize, if you continue to do what you have always done, you're going to get the same results. If you can't see growth or progress from what you are doing in your personal or professional life, then, it's time to make a change.

Professionally, when you're ready to take your business to a new level, you may need to seek the help of an Image Consultant to work with you or your company. The Image Consultant can assist with brand strategy, media training, and much more. This person or agency can assist in "rejuvenating" your appearance to the public. In terms, your new business image will attract more customers. And, more customers mean, more revenue.

Many celebrities have Image Consultants and Wardrobe Stylists. The Wardrobe Stylist acts somewhat as a personal shopper. Selecting the proper clothes for the celebrity. If you feel you're not as strong in this area or you need someone with a "bit" more expertise in this area, hire a wardrobe stylist to assist with creating a new image for you and/or your business.

One person can hold both titles or you can hire multiple people. When hiring a person, be sure to consult their references, be sure they have a pleasant disposition and attitude. Because you will have to work in close proximity with this person(s). Be sure they are not emotional, opinionated, rude, and unprofessional.

Many of you have made comments regarding my website: www.tonilove.com. At the beginning of this year, I "changed my image". It took a team of people to assist in getting the results I envisioned. They are: Maria Palladino, my website designer, Kris Cole, wardrobe stylist, Derek Blanks, photographer, Saisha Beechum, make-up artist, and Makeda Smith, public relations manager.

As I've stated in the past, surround yourself with the right people. Maria and Makeda have been on my team for years, advising and assisting me throughout my career. Kris, Derek, and Saisha worked with me for the first time on this project. Many of you have seen Derek Blanks photos on magazine covers such as: "Essence", he's shot photos of Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Monique, Trey Songz, Usher, and many more; as well as the "Alter Ego" photos featured on "The Real Housewives of Atlanta".

Until next time......

Toni Love
Author: "The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extensions"
www.tonilove.com
Twitter: @cosmogirl205
Facebook: Toni Love Cosmetology

Introducing: The Toni Love's Hair Cleansing System

Hello Everyone!!!! I want to take this opportunity to INTRODUCE you to the Toni Love's Hair Cleansing System. First, I would like to bring to your attention: YOUR HAIR IS NOT CLEAN!!!!! Yes, I said it! Even if you shampoo everyday and/or every other day. Why? Because most people continuosly use products (shampoos and conditioners) over and over, but, when do you ever strip the product off the hair shaft and start anew. My first product, the Residue Remover is all natural, with extracts such as: lemon, rosemary, wild mint, sage, and more. It is a "pre-shampoo" solution. It is sprayed onto the hair and scalp, massaged throughout the hair and scalp for 3-5 minutes and rinse. Why is this necessary? Because most times, the hair will not lather during the first shampoo, due to product build-up, oils, styling aids, such as: mousses, gels, glazes, and evironmental debris. The Residue Remover cleans the hair shaft of all of the above, BEFORE shampooing. The Residue Remover is great to use BEFORE A COLOR APPLICATION!!!! Most color applications does not give 100% satisfactory results. Why? Because stylists are applying permanent color and bleach over hair products that are left on the hair shaft. Now, the color has to work through the hair spray, mousse, gel, glaze, oil sheen, etc. that's applied to the hair BEFORE the client comes to the salon. The Residue Remover can be sprayed onto the clients hair liberally, (do not disturb/aggravate the scalp to prevent burning) rinse, allow client to sit under a luke warm dryer, and then apply the color and/or bleach. Now, the color is applied directly to the hair shaft, no interruptions, and the results are great!!!! The Residue Remover is for ALL hair types. The next product is the Cleanser, a shampoo with a "hint" of peppermint oil, to soothe the scalp and cleanse the hair and scalp. It has a mild fragrance and it's nice, smooth, and lathers. The Cleanser is for ALL hair types. The last product is the Conditioner, which has menthoyl and leaves the scalp soothing and cool. The Conditioner is NON-GREASY, which leaves the hair soft and manageable. The Conditioner is for ALL hair types. The reveiws have been great and TODAY, April 9th, the products have been picked up by the Beauty Mark Beauty Supply chain!!!!! The products will be sold in their three (3) stores throughout AL and MS. So, if you are reading this blog, be sure to check out this product. You will know the hair is thoroughly cleansed and you will see and feel results. I'm reminded of a special Oprah did as she was documenting the opening of her Leadership Academy for Girls in Africa. The planning and construction of the academy took five (5) years. As we know, Oprah was in Chicago taping two shows a day during that time and the public didn't know the academy was being constructed.

As I was watching the documentary, I listened very intently to the girls, ages 12-14, so articulate, excited, and displaying so much poise, as well as a desire to learn. My mind started to wonder, how can a woman in Chicago, go into another country and build a school? Most people think, "Oh, it's Oprah, she has so much money". But, it takes more than money. To be successful, you have to have a great team of people working alongside you.

As I continued to watch the documentary, I realized she has a team of over 400 people working alongside her to accomplish her goals. She has people who has expertise in certain areas, in which she is not familiar. Yet, she is NOT threaten. Many times, when we are "the boss" or in charge, we become threaten by people on our team who are smarter and take initiative. Many feel these people are trying to take over their business.

But, if you are the smartest person in your organization and/or partnership, you are in trouble!!!! I've always tried to surround myself with people who are smarter than me, make more money than me, travel internationally more than me, and have businesses more successful than mine. By doing so, I have learned so much.

In life, whether it's a marriage, relationship, friendship, or work relationship, it takes teamwork. It takes everyone involved to do their part. In all of the situations listed, you have to keep an open mind, still having a desire to learn, and try to keep a positive attitude. Also, you have to do your part in making relationships work.

There are three questions that can be asked before entering a relationship of any sort. "Can they do?, Will they do?, and Do they fit?" By answering these questions beforehand, you will not waste a lot of time.

Lastly, education is FREE and/or almost free today. Continue to take classes and if you have not gone to school, start this year!!!! You are NEVER too old to learn. Start with one class, read your trade magazines, watch the news, read the paper, and stay informed. Therefore, if you are the leader, you will have something to share with your team. As you learn, teach others!!!

Just remember: It takes TEAMWORK to make a DREAM WORK!!!!!

Until next time,
Create a Better Day!!!
www.tonilove.com
Facebook: Toni Love Cosmetology
Author: "The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extenstions"

February: The Month of "Love" and "Black History"

Hello Everyone!!!

As we enter the month of February, many of us think of Valentine's Day and that special someone. Love is a BEAUTIFUL thing!!! When two people can share their innermost thoughts and dreams with each other without being judged, when two people can go through good times and bad times together, when they can make a fun night out of the most simple things. Such as: sitting outside in lawn chairs listening to music, sitting in the car listening to music, driving and singing songs together, no matter how bad they sound:-). Calling each other through the day just to say "hi, now get back to work" or "I love you, goodbye". When two people can become so close, one is thinking something, the other person says it, or the two say things at the same time.

Love is when you are thinking of the person and the phone rings, or you receive a text, or a song that is dear to both of you comes on the radio at that very moment. Love is when you're working and you think of something funny, a moment shared, and you laugh out loud. Love doesn't hurt, it's suppose to feel good.

During this month, if you are in business, capatalize on the celebration of "LOVE" by running a special. Decorate an area in your business to get the clients in the mood for your "special". Discount a chemical service or, since Valentine's Day is on a Monday, have Valentine's Week in your business, where ALL services are discounted for the week and/or month.

As we use our techniques and products to serve clients, we must pay recognition to the people who introduced us to them, and, since this is Black History month, I will start with Madame C.J. Walker. Many think Madame Walker invented the pressing comb, but, she invented a "salve" to apply to the hair, in conjunction to the pressing method of hair straightening.

Madame Walker was the FIRST, self-made African-American female millionaire. In the cosmetology industry, there are many great stories of contributors who are still not recognized. One who comes to mind is Mr. S.B. Fuller, owner of Fuller Products, who had a very diverse sales team in the 50's and 60's. Mr. Fuller had over 500 sales people, men and women, black and white and during that time; a great accomplishment. He was so determined to be successful, he left his small town walking toward success, no definite plan.

Mr. Fuller was a mentor to Mr. Joe Louis Dudley, Jr., who bought his first Fuller "sales kit" with $10 and later turned it into millions. Mr. Dudley and his wife Eunice and their three children
worked out of their kitchen for years until they could afford to hire staff and salespeople. Today, Dudley Products Inc. has been in business almost 40 years. The company owns salons, a manufacturing plant, beauty schools, beauty centers, and has graduated over 25,000 licensed professionals.

There are so many other "greats" who have contributed to this industry: Mr. Johnson, Mr. McBride, Mr. Stearles, Mr. Gardner, Mrs. Joyce Williams, The Luster Family, The Bronner Family, Ms. Poro of Poro College, where Chuck Berry was a graduate, and many more. So, as we continue through this month of Love and History, take some time out of your busy schedule and visit a museum with your children, play something historic in your business, or better yet, play some love songs to relax your clients.

Thank you Carter G. Woodson for Black History Month......And thank you "Cupid", for allowing me, to experience love in my life..........

Create a Better Day!!!!!
Toni Love
Facebook: Toni Love Cosmetology
www.tonilove.com
Author: "The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extensions"

A New Life for the New Year!!!!

Hello Everyone!!!!

The New Year (2011) has come and I hope you have new visions, new dreams, new goals, and new aspirations for the future. It's good to have visions, dreams, goals, and aspirations, but without effort and work, they will not turn into reality. Over the past year, I have learned a lot about myself, as well as other people. I've learned to stay true to myself and do what feels right and not compromise to please others.

Many times in business and in life, we make rules, and we compromise our positions. Afterwards, deep down inside, we don't feel comfortable about our decisions. Don't ever let your family, friends, clients, spouses, children, or co-workers pull you down to their level, or make you doubt yourself or compromise your position. Especially, if they are too sorry or lazy to come up to another level or don't want to accept the truth about a situation.

Sometimes in business and in life, we can become too comfortable. We stop having visions about doing better in our lives. We stop "seeing" ourselves happy. We stop dreaming about our future and/or the future of our businesses. We stop setting personal and professional goals and challenging ourselves to live better and/or do better, because it's scary or it looks too hard. So, we take the easy way out and do nothing, but, coast along. We stop aspiring to have a peace of mind and experience a true sense of happiness. We simply stop LIVING, we just exist.

Existing through life is going through the motions. We stop laughing. We stop being ourselves. We stop experiencing love. We stop acting silly. We stop paying attention to the little things, for example: the sun, the moon, and the stars. We stop paying attention to our surroundings. We stop being creative and innovative. We stop challenging ourselves to become better in our personal and professional lives. We stop believing in ourselves and the strength that lies within us. We stop trying, because things get too hard or complicated. We stop moving forward with what we know is right or feels right, because someone is going to get hurt. We stop being responsible, because it's too difficult. We STOP GROWING!!!!

So, as you start this new year, don't stop and don't just exist. Don't bury yourself in something else, so, you don't have to deal with "your" reality. Face your challenges "head-on", stand up, and take responsiblity for your actions. Set yourself free!!!! Free from guilt, free from pain, free from unhappiness, free from consequences, free from negativity. Live now, live for today!!!!!

I wish you all the best!!!

Create a NEW DAY!!!!
Toni Love
www.tonilove.com
Facebook: Toni Love Cosmetology
Author: "The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extensions"
Columnist: Barbers Only Magazine

The Truth About Bonding Glue

Hello Everyone!!!

First, allow me to wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season!!!!

Today, I have chosen this topic because of an experience with a student who attended a Hair Replacement class. She's a licensed cosmetologist who brought two of her clients with her to get measured for a system/unit. (hairpiece) Both ladies were bald on top and the stylist brought them to the class, because she couldn't understand why these ladies were losing their hair. She tried various methods of treatments and was to the point of sending them to a physican.

Both ladies had on commercial hair with the usage of bonding glue. I asked her to remove the commercial hair, so I could analyze the natural hair and scalp. When she was removing the commercial hair, I realized, "SHE" was the problem. She did not use bond remover, she took both ladies to the shampoo bowl and shampooed their hair, pulling and tugging the commercial hair until it was detached from the natural hair.

As you can imagine, some of the natural hair was pulled out, being the bonding glue was attached to it. After we measured both ladies for their systems/units, I noticed the build-up of bonding glue on the natural hair, that was not removed when shampooed. This stylist proceeded to add new commercial hair to the natural hair, on top of the bonding glue, left from the previous hairstyle.

At that point, I stopped her and took her to a private area. I consulted with the clients a few minutes to get a little history of their hair loss, how it affected them, their previous services, etc.
One of the clients informed me, when the stylist can't remove the glue, she cuts it out!!!! Alarmed by what I was hearing, I remained calm and assured both ladies, they would be please with their new styles.

I went to consult with the stylist, to inform her, she was the problem. These ladies had been a victim of improper removal of bonding glue. As there are alot of products on the market, there are instructions to be followed, and bonding glue should be removed with bonding glue remover.

A few tips to remember:

1. Always use bonding glue remover to release commercial hair from the natural hair. (follow manufacturer's directions)

2. Do not shampoo and pull out commercial hair.

3. Always use a conditioner after removing bonding glue to restore moisture in the hair shaft.

4. Never cut the natural hair to remove bonding glue.

5. Never bond on top of old glue.

6. Always apply bonding glue on the hair closet to the scalp, but, not on the scalp.

7. Do not use bonding glue in the same area repeatedly.

8. Give the natural hair a rest, before bonding again.

Until next time, create a better day!!!!

Toni Love
www.tonilove.com
Facebook: Toni Love Cosmetology
Author: The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extensions"
tonilovetc205@gmail.com

Tips to Starting a Business

Hello Everyone!!!!

Many people ask me about starting a business, but, I don't always have the answer depending on the nature of their business. If you are interested in starting a business, take your time and do your research. Find out as much as you can about the business of interest.

Another important tip, work in the industry of interest, BEFORE going into business for yourself. Then, you can observe what works and what does not work. For example: before owning a salon, I worked in my mother's salon and a few chain salons. I worked where I was paid a salary, paid on commission, and I worked in a booth rental setting.

Before opening a school, I worked at a high school, with a vocational program offering cosmetology. I worked in a private school, as well as a community college. Before I started offering continuing education classes, I worked as a Platform Artist with Sally Beauty Company and as Director of Continuing Education for Dudley Products.

One of the most important tips I would like to share, prepare a business plan and budget before starting a business. Be sure to obtain estimates from construction costs, equipment, supplies, and any other items associated with a cost. Also, if you are planning to obtain a loan from the bank, the loan officer will ask to view the business plan. It needs to be realistic and contain "Revenue Generators", (methods of generating income), or simply, "how is the business going to make money?"

If your business is going to be "non-profit" and you are seeking to obtain a grant, you need to research the process. The first step is to acquire a non-profit lawyer for assistance. Then, apply for your "non-profit" status, (501-C) with the IRS. The lawyer should assist you from this point and/or take classes pertaining to starting a non-profit business.

As a business owner, another important tip I will pass along, is to surround yourself with positive people. There are other successful business owners who will love to mentor you and give you great advice and/or suggestions. Continue to grow through education, join professional organizations within your industry and continue to take classes throughout your tenure as a business owner.

You must establish rules and regulations to govern the business by, before starting it. You must learn to manage yourself, before you can manage other people. You must practice professional ethics at all times. You must continue to study at all times, by, reading books, listening to helpful audiobooks, taking classes on marketing, management, and salesmanship.

Lastly, you must be honest, yes, you want to go into business because you love what you do, but you also go into business to MAKE A PROFIT!!!!!:-)

Until Next Time.....Create A Better Day!!!!!

type='text'>Men and Grooming

Hello Everyone!!!!!

My best friend, Lamon Davis, is assisting me with this blog. He reads my blog and follows my career pretty closely and suggested I write something pertaining to men. Actually, he selected the topic, "Men and Grooming". It is also safe to say, he is a contributor to this article.

After several conversations, he pointed out to me, men need help in the "grooming department". We discussed skincare, nail care, balding, thinning, as well as clothing. I found his interest in this topic and the intensity in which he spoke, very compelling. He told me how men need to pay more attention to their nails and keeping them trimmed and cleaned. And, I agree.

He also told me on another ocassion, how he cut himself shaving and left two raised scars on his face, as a result of a blade being too sharp. Therefore, men, please pay attention to the pressure being put on the razor strokes. It's not good to cut too close, remember, you can always go over the area again. Be sure, to pay attention to the direction in which you are shaving. Many men are all over the place, taking the razor in many directions on the face and neck. It's best to stroke in the same direction while shaving.

To keep the skin from being irritated, be sure to apply antiseptic and/or aftershave immediately after shaving. Lamon and I also discussed men who are losing their hair, (he usually wears a bald head) and I suggested he try a new look. When he allows his hair to grow out, it's somewhat thin on top, so I suggested he use a water-proof color comb, similar to a mascara brush and apply to the thin areas. He tried it, cutting the sides and back low, and everyone noticed something different about his look.

Some people thought he had decided to allow his hair to grow out, instead of wearing the usual bald head. Many people thought he looked younger, not knowing the color was lightly applied to the thin areas. These water-proof color combs/sticks are sold at all beauty supply stores and many discount stores and drugstores.

Lastly, as the season changes, it's time to look into wardrobe changes. Lamon told me, his challenge is not having clothes, but, finding the time to wear them, since his job plays a major role in his daily wardrobe. There are many people facing this same situation, so, my suggestion is to wear your nice clothes when you are not working. Dress up, not down, when you're off!!!!! Go to new places and attend events that will allow you the opportunity to wear those nice clothes.

During the fall and winter, wear the darker colors and mix them with "earth tones" to add lighter color, but staying in season. Men, purple is a really popular color this season, representing "Royalty", so be sure to pick up a purple scarf, sweater, tie (paisley), and/or socks this season. Dark brown is another popular color this season, so men, get your dark brown pants and a "earth tone" shirt or sweater, get those nails done, (and be sure to get them buffed for shine, if you don't like "clear " nail polish), get that fresh hair cut, and some nice cologne and enjoy the season!!!!!

And remember, if you can smell your cologne, you have on too much!!!!

Lamon, thank you so much for your input and suggestion......It's always good to have friends who are interested and concerned, Love You!!!!

Until Next Time.........

Toni Love
Author: "The World of Wigs, Weaves, and Extensions"
www.tonilove.com
tonilovetc205@gmail.com
Facebook: Toni Love Cosmetology

Wigs! Wigs!!! Wigs!!!

Hello Everyone!!!

As we enter the Fall season, it's time to think about changing our clothes, the color of our clothes, our shoes, and even our HAIR!!! When you pick up a copy of September's issue of the O Magazine, Oprah is on the cover wearing a wig. Inside, she is encouraging women to explore with their hair and make changes. There are so many wigs on the market in which one can select.

Wigs come in human hair type and synthetic hair type. They come in many colors and various textures. They are: Straight, Curly, Wavy, and Kinky. They are long, medium, and short and are for full coverage or half coverage. (full wigs and half wigs) The bases (inside material)are: mesh, intergration chains, nylon, polyurathane, etc.

Wigs are perfect for a person who wants to try a new hairstyle WITHOUT altering their natural hair. For example: if a person wants to cut their hair short and want to see what it's going to look like before cutting their natural hair, they can try a short wig. The same concept can be applied for color or for someone who has short hair and wants their natural hair to grow out.

Wigs are fun, they are easy to manage and maintain. Be sure to note, a human hair wig has to be taken care of, as the natural hair. The human hair wig can be flat ironed, curled, rolled, etc., just as the natural hair. Synthetic wigs hold their shape and form. The style will not change, unless you change it. The curl pattern won't change, unless you change it. Synthetic wigs tend to be more economical. (cheaper)

As we enter Fall, get out your "Hair Box" and live a little!!!! Try something new!!! Explore your options!!!! As the weather changes, the wig can also aid in keeping your head warm. Today, many people are enjoying natural hair, free from chemicals such as: straightners and relaxers. The hair is in a virgin state and can be very curly. If the curls are really tight, the hair appears to be knotted.

When the hair is natural, it needs to be shampooed and conditioned on a regular basis. It also needs to be moisturized with a hair lotion and/or leave-in conditioner. The scalp excretes natural oils, but, if the hair is really dry, some may need to apply a light scalp oil.

When wearing the hair natural, the ends need to be trimmed every four to six weeks. If you wear braids and/or dreads, be cognizant of the tension applied during these procedures. The hair will break, if pulled too tight. Some people think because it's natural, it can stand the tension.

Remember hair textures are fine, mediun, and coarse, and all of us have one or the other. Therefore, caution should be taken when wearing a style. If wearing a sew-in weave on a regular basis, keep the braided hair natural and if needed, relax around the perimeter. (the hair that is seen)

More damage is done when the hair is relaxed, braided, and sewn-in. The relaxer weakens the hair, the braiding and sewing has a lot of tension associated with it, and the weight of the commercial hair applied, is too much for the natural hair to endure. (resulting in damage and breakage)

If you have chemicals and are allowing the natural hair to grow in, clip the ends, every two to three weeks. As the virgin hair grows from the scalp, you are clipping off the chemicals and eventually, there will be a meeting place. The hair grows everyday. Therefore, clipping the ends more frequently, you will be natural before you know it.

So, remember these tips for natural hair and BE HAPPY NAPPY!!!!

(This blog was inspired by a young medical intern I spoke with about her natural hair at Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL......Ms. C. Green.....It was great speaking with you and best wishes on your medical career!!!!! For more information about class schedules, please visit my website: http://www.tonilove.com/.....

After seeing a story on Naomi Campbell's hair loss today, (www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article 6/29/10) I decided to start a blog to discuss hair loss and other pertinent information about hair, skin, nails, and other "industry" topics. There was a picture of Naomi's hair extensions pulled away from her face exposing her balding side areas. In the article it stated, "the hair loss was due to wearing extensions". This is true, when the commercial hair is pulling too tight onto the natural hair, (traction alopecia) or if bonded, improper removal.

In my book, I discuss "proper" application and removal techniques. Also, I discuss men hair loss and the different types of alopecia. Hair loss is very serious for those who suffer from it. It takes a VERY educated hair stylist to deal with it and offer enough solutions to their clients. As well as deal with the emotional effects of it.

Hair Loss is caused by many things such as: malnutrition, dryness, tension and tightness of braids/extensions/buns, over-processing from chemicals (color, perms, relaxers, etc.), over-conditioning, mechanical damage (flat ironing/curling too much), split ends traveling up the hair shaft-keep those ends clipped!!!!, alopeica, etc.

The solutions can vary from simply clipping the ends to as extensive as adding a customized non-surgical hair replacement system/unit.

Mark your calendars, October 10th-11th, 2010, I am hosting a Hair Loss and Business Conference for you to come and get educated on hair loss from dermatologists and get styling solutions from educated hair stylists/professionals. The price for the conference is $95.00 BEFORE September 1st, 2010.

If you are reading this, and you wear commercial hair, be sure to take care of your natural hair.

Be sure to check back for the next topic!!!!
